Resection of Haglunds Deformity

Overview

This outpatient procedure is used to treat Haglund’s deformity by removing the bony bump on the back of the calcaneus (the heel bone).

Preparation

The patient is positioned so that the back of the ankle is clearly visible to the surgeon. Anesthetic is administered, and the area is cleaned and sterilized.

Accessing the Calcaneus

The surgeon inspects the calcaneus, either with an endoscope or through a small incision on the back of the heel.

Removing the Bump

The retrocalcaneal bursa and the bony bump are cut away and reshaped to eliminate pressure on the soft tissues.

End of Procedure

The incision is closed with sutures or surgical staples. The ankle is bandaged. A splint may be required as the foot heals. Most patients will recover within four to six weeks.
