jones fracture fixation

Overview

This procedure is used to correct a Jones fracture -a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone of the foot. During this procedure, the surgeon inserts one or more screws (and sometimes additional hardware)to stabilize the bone and allow it to heal properly.

Preparation

In preparation for the procedure, the patient is positioned and anesthesia is administered. The surgeon creates an incision along the outer side of the foot to access the fractured metatarsal.

Fixation

The surgeon carefully inserts one or more surgical screws into the bone to stabilize the fracture. In some cases, wires or a rigid metal plate may be used in addition to the screws.

End of Procedure and Aftercare

When the procedure is complete, the incision is closed. and the foot is bandaged and placed in a splint. The patient will not be allowed to bear weight on the foot for two to eight weeks. A walking brace or shoe may be required until the fracture has fully healed.
