Hill-Sachs Lesion

Overview

This condition is a traumatic fracture of the humeral head that leaves an indentation in the bone. This changes the shape of the humeral head and can interfere with normal arm motion.

Causes

This condition is typically caused by dislocation of the shoulder. The humerus slips out of the socket and is compressed against the socket’s rim, creating a divot in the ball of the humerus.

Symptoms

Symptoms can include pain, instability, and recurrent dislocations of the shoulder.

Treatment

Many smaller sized Hill-Sachs lesions can be treated with physical therapy. More severe and larger lesions may require surgery
